According to Chelsea Clinton, Nelson Mandela is of the main reasons why she became devoted to help African communities. As a child, she was able to witness one of the most historic events in Africa, when Nelson Mandela was released in February of 1990. This week, Chelsea is bound to go to Africa on a six-stop trip with her father, the former United States president Bill Clinton.
Here and now
Twenty three years ago, Chelsea was only able to watch from afar the historic moment of Mandela’s release from captivity. From that point on, she told herself that there was something she could do to be instrumental in changing Africa.
Today, her dream is being realized through The Bill, Hilary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. For more than a decade, the foundation sought to collaborate and create partnerships with business and other branches of government in utilizing their resources to help disadvantaged African people. The foundation gave Africans many opportunities that have given them and their families something to look forward to in life.
Chelsea Clinton said that people who live in Africa can have the opportunity to get a decent job and maintain a decent home despite the fact that the continent is full of conflicts. The Clintons’ only child, through the foundation, aims to create a change in the perception of Africa and those who reside in it.
Knowing the world
Raised by a family of successful politicians in a country were opportunity is readily available, Chelsea came to understand the world around her as she toured with her parents from continent to continent. Together with her mother, former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, she met girls of the same age who are either as blessed as she is or the exact opposite. Chelsea said that her close encounters with people from different walks of life made her realize how advantageous her circumstances have been.
What the foundation offers
Focusing on realizing the goals of the foundation is very important. As dedicated public servants, the Clintons’ work through the foundation clearly manifests the amount of help they have been providing to those in need. With a range of target areas for improvement, the foundation tries to encompass every issue that needs to be dealt with in Africa. Health care is one of the most important issues for the Bill, Hilary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. The foundation also targets economic empowerment as well climate change.
Off to Africa
Malawi is the first place the Clintons will visit. Chelsea and Bill Clinton are expected to meet with Joyce Banda, President of Malawi. Their very first stop is to a visit to patients diagnosed with HIV at the Clinton Health Access Initiative Clinic. Chelsea and Bill are also scheduled to make stop in Zambia, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda and South Africa.
This is not the first time Chelsea came to Africa. She went there in 1997 together with her mother, followed by a tour of the former President in the succeeding year. At that time, Bill Clinton’s visit was considered a very historic event in African history since he was the first sitting U.S. President to go to visit the continent.
