Nutritionists say that bacon is cholesterol-laden so it is not good for the health, particularly if the person has reached his senior years, but last Tuesday, residents of a senior center in New York got a healthy serving of bacon, of Kevin Bacon. Yes, it was a very nice treat, indeed, as multi-awarded actor and musician Kevin Bacon handed out meals to seniors.
Kevin Bacon not only helped in delivering the meals. He also helped in cooking and packing them. The Hollywood actor, who had been doing so many good deeds, most of them unpublicized, volunteered at the Encore Community Services to help with the meals prepared for Citymeals, according to its executive director, Beth Shapiro.
A big surprise
The staff at Citymeals-on-Wheels were star-struck when Kevin Bacon suddenly showed up and wore an apron to help them cook and pack the meals, according to Dan McCabe. Bacon runs a charity called Sixdegrees.org where McCabe is the president. Bacon stayed around to help deliver the meals to seniors who were homebound. One of those who were lucky enough to be visited by the actor was actually a former singer in Broadway. She sang “Wind Beneath My Wings” for the actor.
A boost for their cause
The management of Citymeals-on-Wheels was very grateful to Kevin Bacon’s surprise visit, as it will help raise awareness to their cause. The organization delivers meals to about 18,000 senior citizens annually.
Bacon, together with Shapiro also delivered Labor Day boxes, which contained shelf-stable meals. They made an advanced delivery since several meal centers would be closed for the long holiday weekend.
Good Egg Contest
The event happened simultaneously with the start of the Good Egg Contest, which is being sponsored by the American Egg Board and Sixdegrees.org. Individuals were invited to create a parody of the web film called “Wake Up to Eggs with Bacon” that promotes nutrition or hunger nonprofits in the United States. American egg farmers and the American Egg Board donated the eggs used for breakfast meals prepared by the Encore Community Services as well as $1,000 in cash.
Shapiro later said that she wanted to thank all the sponsors for the meals in behalf of their meal recipients in New York City, most of which are isolated and the only person they usually see is the staff member who delivers the meal every day.
