Local Teen Provides Free Informal ESL Classes for Migrant Workers

Migrant workers in California are receiving ESL classes from a local teen who is not new to charity work. She is trying to help these people manage the language barriers by giving them free lessons in the English language so they could have a competitive edge when looking for a job.

The charitable teen is Shira Alcouloumre, who is devoting her spare time to teach migrant day workers living in Laguna Beach to learn the English language. She said these people are very hardworking and teaching them English will help improve their chances of getting a job.

Not a newbie when it comes to charity

Shira and her brother Aaron have been providing help to their local community in different ways since their middle school days. One of their projects was to provide food for the homeless in Laguna Beach. They have solicited the help of a local restaurant to donate their day-old food to one of the homeless shelters in their town. That project brought them to a lot where day laborers waited to get hired. They started their English classes on the site after noticing that those laborers who can speak English are often chosen over the others.

They gave the name Laguna Friends in Need to their charitable group and aside from teaching English classes for free, they have raised over $20,000 in kind and in cash donations to improve the hiring site and provide the waiting laborers with a safe environment.

Due to her unselfish work for these migrant workers, she has been chosen by the Helen Diller Family Foundation as the recipient of the Diller Teen Awards for 2015. The foundation supports leadership efforts by Jewish teens, according to their website. Shira will also receive a price of $36,000 that she can use for her education or to extend her project.

She plans to build a classroom at the hiring lot with her prize money. She also plans to get some certified ESL teachers to take over the language instruction for the migrant workers when she graduates.
