Mathew Flores, who is 12 years old and lives in a suburb in Salt Lake City, loves to read books but cannot afford them, until his mailman gave him a big surprise. They do not have a car, no money to buy books and nothing extra for a bus ride to the library. What he usually does is read advertisements and newspapers. Last Friday he asked the mailman at the post office, Ron Lynch, for junk mail. It was such a strange question that made the mailman ask him for a reason for such a request.
Getting the full story behind the strange request, the mailman thought that he could help Mathew Flores get some books so he could satisfy his passion for reading.
Social network plea
Ron Lynch posted Mathew Flores’ story on Facebook. He himself was given books when he was a child and so he thought that there would be people out there who could spare some books for Mathew. Lynch thought that he could get at least 50 to 60 books from people willing to share. Actually he was thinking that his friends would be the ones responding to his request. To his surprise, his social network plea went viral.
People from different places, such as India, Australia and the United Kingdom responded wholeheartedly and hundreds of books have been delivered to Mathew Flores. Lynch said that more books are expected to arrive. He was so amazed at the response from people and had posted a message of thanks for their generosity. He said that he deserved a little credit but the true heroes are the people who readily responded to the plea.
Disbelief
Mathew Flores was in disbelief when he started receiving the books. At first he thought the delivery was a mistake. He said that his mother taught him to read while he was still very young. Most young boys his age would be into electronics and video games, but he is of a different mold. He does not want to watch TV or play games all the time. What he wants to do the most is to read.
Mathew said that he would be sharing his books with other children and also promised to read every one of the books he had received. And Lynch just delivered another batch of books to this young boy, who said that reading is interesting, fun and makes one smarter.
