For New York City’s three-term Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the key to success is through the use of proper English grammar. In a rather controversial remark while participating in a local radio show last June 7, he answered a question from a caller very candidly and without any second thoughts. According to Mayor Bloomberg, the children of New York City need to focus more on the use of proper English grammar or they are not assured of future success.
The mayor believes that young people would definitely have no hope for a bright future if they do not speak with good grammar as many are inclined to do these days. A few hours after the radio show, a report was released in public showing that a lot of students from city schools had disappointing results in state exams.
Directing the kids to proper learning
Though harsh, Mayor Bloomberg’s remark is only an expression of worry for the future of the kids living in his beloved city. The Mayor elaborated on the career downsides of using jargon and double negatives instead of proper grammar. In one of his commentaries, Mayor Bloomberg stated that high school graduates had better choose to become plumbers rather than put themselves through to college without having the skills that higher education requires. According to the mayor, not having the ability to use good grammar would also be a hindrance to landing them their dream jobs.
After learning about the quality of education in public schools of New York at present and the changes that need to be made, Mayor Bloomberg made it a point to prioritize the improvement of the quality of education for the benefit of NYC kids.
Dealing with other concerns
The educational system is very vast realm and it could hardly be revamped with a single stroke of a pen. Even though there are certain aspects that can be addressed, there is always a chance that more than one or two additional problems could arise. With regard to New York City kids’ grammar issue, other concerns soon popped out that contribute significantly to the fast decline of the city’s educational standards.
A drop in quality
In the past years, there has been a very noticeable drop in terms of the quality of education in many public schools in the New York area. According to the New York Post, aside from the significant deficiency in the use of proper English grammar, there are issues pertaining to the performance of students in others subjects. One of the subjects in focus is US history. The Post report revealed that one school’s passing rate dropped from 77% in 2012 to a 21% low this year.
Placing himself in others’ shoes
As a concerned public servant, Mayor Bloomberg usually puts himself in others’ shoes. According to people close to him, Mayor Bloomberg is not all talk. John Gambling, the host of the radio show where Bloomberg pointed the importance of proper grammar, told the public that the mayor is much attuned to the need for proper use of grammar because of his own background. Though he has a clear grasp of English and Spanish, Mayor Bloomberg admitted that he himself often finds it tough when it comes to constructing grammatically correct sentences.
