Michelle Obama Will Keep Using Her Celebrity Status in the Service of Various Causes

The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has undeniable charm and charisma and she is unafraid to wield it. She has been utilizing the power and influence of her position to put forward causes that are near to her heart. She seems unfazed by criticisms of her appearance in the viral “Evolution of Mom Dancing” video which she did with television host Jimmy Fallon as well as her Oscars appearance.

Four years gone and four more to go

During the first term of President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama was at the forefront of the very promising fight against childhood obesity in the United States with the program called “Let’s Move.” She is still very much engaged in being at the spotlight as she leads public dance events to encourage children and families to be more actively engaged in regular exercise. She is also active in various activities for the benefit of families of American military personnel. This project is called the “Joining Forces Military Families Program.” She is currently looking for other avenues to explore and champion in the next four years of the President’s second term in office.

In the first four years, Mrs. Obama had never fallen out of favor with anyone and no critic could say anything negative about her. Even when the President fell under a barrage of negative commentaries, the First Lady was untouched by them. Now that the President’s second term is starting, the trend is changing and some people are starting to question the appropriateness of some of Mrs. Obama’s recent television appearances. Some critics say it is rather “sad” how the Obama couple had taken their celebrity status to the next level. Her staunchest critics are challenging the First Lady to be more involved in more “serious” activities and be less inclined to “frivolous” public appearances.

A pop icon?

The First Lady’s enthusiasm and natural star quality exudes even more when she is in the public eye. And some of her appearances (like the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Oscars) are leading critics to the conclusion that she is becoming an icon of pop culture.

Even Jack Nicholson, one of the biggest stars in Hollywood seemed star-struck with the image of the First Lady in a stunning evening gown announcing that “Argo” had won the Best Picture Award in the recently concluded 85th Academy Awards. Nicholson introduced the First Lady who was projected on a giant screen live via satellite from the White House. She must have upstaged the Hollywood elite, but it was not the first time that First Lady made an appearance in the Awards night. Former first lady Laura Bush did so in 2002.

All means necessary

Despite the very vocal detractors, Michelle Obama reiterated that she would keep on using all forms of media in order to reach out and make people aware of the causes tied to her name. She added that the critical response to her appearance in the Academy Awards is not surprising to her at all.

Michelle Obama’s supporters do not seem to mind the extra attention that their champion is bringing to their advocacy programs. People are paying attention, and they say that this is because she is a beloved and highly respected person.
