North Korea temporarily eased tensions against South Korea and the United States as it celebrated the 101st birthday of founding father Kim Il Sung.
On Monday, residents of Pyongyang and other nearby cities commemorated the anniversary of Kim Il Sung, North Korea’s first president who passed away in 1994, using flowers, banners and flags. It was a major take off from the expected military forces parade that was supposed to be held on the same day.
According to earlier reports, Kim Jong-Un, North Korea’s current leader was seen paying his respects at the mausoleum of his grandfather and father Kim Jong-Il in Pyongyang.
For several weeks now, North Korea has been in the middle of controversies involving not only their military forces but also their plans of combating and attacking South Korea, the United States and Japan. These reports were released after the UN sanctions were mandated in response to North Korea’s nuclear arms test that was held in February.
Mere negotiations
Over the weeks, North Korea and the United States have been trying to make their ends meet in an attempt to get into a dialogue with one another. The latter imposes that they will only agree to this dialogue if the former agrees to abandon their desire to make use of nuclear weapons. On the other hand, North Korea has claimed these weapons as a “treasured sword” and is not likely to give them up.
Controversial involvements
According to some sources, North Korea is said to have been angered by the United States and South Korea’s annual military exercises and has called it a rather hostile act. Also according to other analysts, the grandson of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong-Un is aggressively trying to boost his leadership in the said country. Although he has demanded the United States for a peaceful talk, he has not agreed on anything as of late.
Forgotten attacks
During the 101st celebration of the anniversary of Kim Il Sung, it has been very evident in the streets of Pyongyang that although tension may still exist in the hearts of the people, it was temporarily forgotten to give respect to their former leader. The crowd climbed up the Mansu Hill to lay flowers on the statue of Kim Il Sung and bowed on his feet. People on the streets were given barley teas while they enjoyed an outdoor show and listened to signature Korean music.
At present, South Korea still remains highly alert of the possibility of North Korea launching a missile any time soon. A South Korean representative said that since North Korea rejected their offer to resolve the problems through dialogues, they are ensuring their preparedness for what may come.
North Korea continues to stand firm in claiming that they don’t have any intention of talking to South Korea unless it abandons its confrontational posture.
