Football superstar David Beckham has agreed to donate his Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) wages amounting to £3.4 million to a couple of children’s charities in Paris, France. The two organizations that will share the endowment are the Necker Children’s Hospital’s charity arm and an association that sends buses packed with educational activities and games to the children’s wards of provincial hospitals in France.
Deal closed
The windfall from the English footballer, whose weekly earnings from his time with PSG is reportedly £170,000, is finally made available to the beneficiaries after a lengthy wrangling. A deal was finally reached after much discussion with French authorities on how to hand over the money without a huge tax bill on either Beckham or the PSG football club.
For the children’s benefit
At a press conference at the Parc des Princes on January 31, Beckham said that he is passionate about children and the charity aspect of it and the club feels the same way as well. He added that he’s not sure that a similar donation has been given before. Since the press conference, not much has been said on the matter and there has been much delay due to tax-related issues.
A new adventure
Last month, Beckham announced that he was going to retire from football after 20 years of playing. When he announced his retirement, the 38-year old former England captain said that it was the right time to finish his career, when he was at the top of the game. Beckham expressed his gratitude to the football club, the fans, and his family as well. It was initially thought that he would contemplate extending his contract with PSG.
On his retirement, Beckham is reportedly worth £165 million. He has returned with his wife and children to London. There are sources saying that Beckham has plans to start a film career and Victoria Beckham is already set to meet with Hollywood bigwigs in Los Angeles.
