Many Facebook Users Afflicted with Ongoing Giraffe Fever

Anything goes in the social media. People discuss about all topics under the sun from their purring cats to their hearty breakfast and their gourmet dinners. Social media groups are busy everyday with members updating their status, posting photos and exchanging ideas and views in the threads.

Facebook users

Facebook is noted to be the largest among social media networks with 128 million active users everyday that share whatever they find worthy such as news, events, videos and even occasional memes. Facebook is oftentimes the venue of odd trends. The recent giraffe riddle has become viral for a few days now and as a result the network is currently flooded with giraffe photos and icons. People who could not answer the riddle agree to change their profile photos to a giraffe to add fun and amusement among the participants.

Game mechanics

The riddle is presented to Facebook users in a scenario form. It describes a situation where someone’s parents ring the doorbell at 3 o’clock in the morning to wake up their child. Apparently they want to have breakfast. The available foods are strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. The riddle question is – what thing to open first. The question is both catchy and philosophical and easy to get but many users failed to answer it correctly and thus Facebook newsfeed got flooded with giraffe profile photos. The acceptable answers to the question are: “I open my eyes first” and “I open the door first.”

Different opinions

Those who join in the riddle game find it to be fun, while others are also unimpressed and annoyed. Yet based on the number of safari photos that have been dominating Facebook walls lately, many people seem to be enjoying the meme. Still, a considerable crowd of users think the game is silly and dumb and a waste of time to participate in.

Tolerance and free expression

Being on Facebook, according to social media observers, is to be tolerant of others since free expression is free anyway and everyone has the right to be part of network memes and games no matter how idiotic and unintelligent they seem to be. And while some Facebook users enjoy the liberty to take part in some bland games, others are likewise not prevented from airing their opinions. One Facebook member expressed his wish to have the strength not to slap the faces of the meme players who changed their profile photos to that of the animal. Another user said the game is ridiculous that it puts Facebook in shambles.

Anonymous creator

There is no clear indication as to who created the giraffe riddle. Rumor has it however that the creator is an unnamed Facebook group and that this anonymous team has been recently involved in several hacking acts. A warning has been issued to the meme players that the group might be planning to hack the bank information of those who take part in the game. It is said that once Facebook members change their profile pictures to an image of a giraffe, the hackers will be able to steal data from their bank accounts and consequently siphon out their funds. The precaution is however unfounded and remains to be just as it is – plain baseless rumor. In the meantime the giraffe fever goes on to the pleasure of those who find the riddle funny, and to the chagrin of users who despise this viral game.
