Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has been crowned as Thailand’s new king, on Thursday December 1st, a full fifty days after King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s death.
As is stipulated by protocol, following an invitation from the Thai parliament, Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn accepted, formalizing the accession.
He will be known as King Vajiralongkorn, and becomes the 10th monarch from the Chakri dynasty.
On October 13th, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, King Bhumibo of Thailand, died. A beloved ruler, the government declared Thailand a country in official mourning for one year.
The New Monarch
Maha Vajiralongkorn, 64, became the official heir in 1972, when he was given the title of crown prince. Having spent much of his time overseas, he has yet to win the hearts and minds of the Thai public. The people looked to the former King as a pillar of stability during many years of political disunity and turmoil.
The crown prince was expected to be proclaimed as King upon the death of his father. However, he requested that the ceremony be delayed, as a mark of respect for his father, and to let the Thai public mourn.
A New Era
His accession to the throne begins a new era for Thailand. Yet it is still early to tell if the new monarch will receive the same support and affection as his father. If the Thai people are dissatisfied with their monarch, however, they are unable to criticize him. Under lese-majeste law, Thailand’s monarchy is protected from criticism in the media, including international outlets.
Little is really known about the new Thai King, who has kept a low profile throughout his life. The formal coronation will take place after King Bhumibol’s cremation, sometime next year. Interestingly, Bhumibol’s coronation happened a full four years after brother, King Ananda Mahidol, was killed by gunshot wounds.
All eyes will be on King Vajiralongkorn, as Thailand looks to recover from their sorrow and move into a new era.
