It is not every day that you get colleagues willing to share something with you in this cutthroat world, let alone some cash when almost everyone is working hard to make ends meet. Jennifer Maldonado is a lucky one. Her officemates are willing to share their Powerball lottery winnings with her despite not being able to share in the cost of the tickets.
$20 each for the pool
Last week 12 real estate agents of the Keller Williams Partners Realty in Plantation, Florida decided to pool their money and buy Powerball lottery tickets for the March 23 draw. They each contributed $20 to the pool. Jennifer Maldonado opted not to share because she was keeping a tight hold on her available cash as she had only been hired for two weeks and has not received her pay check yet. She has a 4-year old son.
Very good news
Saturday last week her colleagues were ecstatic with some very good news. They announced that they won $1 million in the lottery. Maldonado thought she was being tricked by her co-workers until their boss confirmed that it is indeed true. The news was quite difficult to believe because the chance of winning said amount ($1M) in the Powerball is 1:5,153,632.65. After taxes, her colleagues will each receive close to $83,333. The other good news is that her co-workers pledged that they will share their winnings with everyone, Maldonado included.
She cannot believe her luck and although she does not know how much her colleagues will share with her, she already plans to surprise her 4-year old son with a Disney World trip.
Laurie Finkelstein Reader, team leader in the realty company said that it does not feel right to leave a colleague out while the rest of them are enjoying their good fortune. For her and the rest of her colleagues, sharing is the most natural thing to do and she believes that next time they feel like buying another Powerball ticket, Maldonado will be very much willing to contribute to the pool.
The jackpot during the March 23 draw went to New Jersey’s Pedro Quezada. He is now $338 million richer.
