Venezuela celebrated today the triumph of the opposition party after congressional elections this past Sunday.
With a substantial voter participation of 74.3%, Venezuelans gave their vote to the opposition, The Democratic Unit Roundtable party. It has been confirmed that the opposition has won 99 seats out of the 167 that constitute the National Assembly. The socialists obtained 46 seats, and the other 22 seats are yet to be announced.
“We have come with our morals and our ethics intact to recognize these adverse results, to accept them, and to say to our Venezuela that the constitution and democracy have triumphed,” said Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, after knowing of the results.
This achievement creates an excellent opportunity for the opposition to start making changes after 17 years of socialist governments since late President Hugo Chavez assumed office in 1999.
The opposite party plans to improve the economy, increase national security, reduce violence on the streets, and diminish inflation.
By having control over two-thirds of the National Assembly, the opposition will be able to pass amnesty laws that allow political prisoners, opponents of Maduro, to be released.
The new National Assembly will be sworn on January 5th, and it will be in office for a five-year period.
